The Aerie Loom living room at dusk, sheer curtains open to the pool and the city beyond

Our World  ·  Lagos

Everyone in Lagos
is on their way home.

One evening, one building in Lagos. A family on the top floor, two newlyweds in Flat 4B, a man who lives alone in Flat 7A. Three front doors, and the same quiet behind each one.

Come in

5:50pm  ·  Outside

The go-slow on the Expressway.

A horn that means hello. A horn that means move. A horn that means nothing at all.

Somebody's generator, on the third pull.

Forty messages, and every one of them needs something.

We love this city. It just never lowers its voice.

The lift landing, green plaster and round niches, the lift doors just open
The lift opens on the top floor, and the building goes quiet.

Then the door closes.

Keys in the bowl. Shoes off. The first cool breath of a room that has been waiting all day.

Aerie Loom started with that sound. We live in the noise too, so we built a shop for the other side of the door. The name is the whole idea: an aerie is a nest built high, above everything, and a loom is where soft things are made.

6:40pm  ·  The top floor

The family together on the sofa by the open window, the city behind the glass

Calm is not the same as quiet.

A home with two children is never quiet. There is a bath to run, a bear to find, a question about the moon that cannot wait until morning. It can still be calm: soft places to land, towels that forgive wet feet, and a living room that already smells of Warm Grain when everyone gets in.

Nothing in this house is saved for guests. It is all for Tuesday.

Her at the window in the evening
Ten minutes at the window before anyone knows she is home.
The daughter on her bed with her bear
Her room, her bear, her rules.
The son holding a big teddy bear
He takes it everywhere. It has been washed more times than anything in the house.
The family on the terrace by the pool
Saturday, 6pm. Wet footprints all the way to the door, and nobody minds.

7:05pm  ·  Flat 4B

A small balcony with a rattan chair, two cups on the side table, the city beyond

Two of everything.

They moved in six weeks ago. The books are still in boxes and the curtains are borrowed from her sister. The kitchen fits one person, so they cook in it together anyway and eat on the balcony while the light goes. The bed was the first thing they got right: good sheets, four pillows, one room that already feels finished.

The small room has been painted twice. By December there will be three of them.

Calm was never about the size of the flat.

A kitchen shelf of cups, bowls and a jug
Half the kitchen was a wedding present. They are still finding places for it.

9:20pm  ·  Flat 7A

A quiet bedroom, a soft rug by the bed, the evening light going

Reason enough.

He gets in late most nights. He could eat standing at the counter. Instead he sets the table for one: the good bowl, the lamp on, his phone face down in the other room. On Sundays he changes the sheets, opens every window, and the flat smells of Morning Hush until noon.

Nobody sees any of it. Some people wait for a reason to make a home beautiful. He decided he was reason enough.

White orchids in a clear vase on a wooden console
One orchid, kept alive for a year. That is one more than most people manage.

10:30pm  ·  Lights down

The master bedroom, the bed turned down

Turn down the noise.

On the top floor she turns the bed down and lets the house go quiet around her. In 4B they argue, gently, about who left the kitchen light on. In 7A he presses the diffuser once and leaves his phone where it is. Three front doors, one last hour: low light, one scent, cool sheets.

Low Light is the scent we made for this hour. Red cherry, dark amber, the lamp on and the door shut.

Every room on this page will follow.

The scent corner lit warm for the evening
The last thing lit.
A candle burning on the low table by the sofa
The day, put down.

Soft spaces, quiet nights.

The house seen from the pool at dusk, every room lit low
